Talkin' 'bout Politics

Posted by Bobby Slydell , 26 May 2009 · 1436 views

Everything is political in our country...probably everywhere there is a country. The VA is no different. Veterans and pundits and the occasional talking head are quick to tell us what this administration is doing for the VA and what that other administration didn't do for the VA. These guys are good, those guys are bad and it goes on ad nauseum.

I'm concerned when I listen to Johnny & Maryann Goodcitizen argue politics though. Sometimes I wonder if they have any idea what they're talking about. "Bush is a war criminal" is one I've listened to recently as well as is "B. Hussein Obama is a traitor Muslim". Both, of course, are incorrect. Bush and Obama each are fine Americans with deep convictions and held or hold the most powerful office in the universe. Each deserves our respect if not our agreement with what they do in the office of POTUS.

Political debate is healthy and it's as American as apple pie and baseball. But...should you be making an apple pie if you can't find your oven? Do you want a player on your team who doesn't know how many bases there are or the origin of the infield fly rule? Shouldn't a baker or a ball player know the difference between an apple and a hardball before they set about doing what they intend to do?

I believe the same is true of politics. If you don't know how our government works (particularly how the DVA works), how can you expect to make a good crust on that pie?

Take the following test. This is the honor system...nobody will ever know the result but you. Don't post it for God's sake, it isn't that kind of test. This isn't open book. If you don't know the answer without looking it up, you're wrong. No cheating now...

(1) How many Senators are there in America?

(2) How many branches of the federal government are there? Name them.

(3) How many judges sit on The Supreme Court?

(4) What is the line of succession to the presidency? Name the people of 1 through 5.

(5) How many presidential elections have you voted in since you became eligible?

(6) What are the first 3 words of the U.S. Constitution?

(7) What are the 3 administrative sections or business units of the DVA?

(8) How many federal executive departments are there? Who do they report to? Name 5.

There you are. Deep in your heart you now know whether or not you're pretty bright and on top of your game or if you're a failure at the politicking thing.

Those are pretty simple so the grading is strict. If you miss one of them, you pass. If you miss 2 or more, you lose and you have no business talking about the government. This excludes number 5 of course. If you haven't voted in all of them, you're a loser.

If you failed, if you're a loser, please take a moment to clean up after yourself and then get off my Interwebs. Oh, alright...you can still surf and lurk but you need to throw out your keyboard and never again make any comment about anyone's political direction.

You aren't qualified to offer your opinions. Leave that to those who know what they're talking about.

Part of being an American citizen is that its your choice to be active or not, People who don't vote also send a message.

By the way I would have done pretty well on your test as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi would be third in line.

Now the worm has turned and President Obama has nominated someone who is Hispanic, a woman and a Liberal Judge. Sort of the exact opposite of some of the more recent picks. Maybe ironic that the First President Bush elevated her to the Federal Court as a Judge.

It will be very interesting to see how this Nomination plays out.

I am just a common ordinary citizen ,and have a ninth grade education. I do not like where this country is headed, and politics are killing this country.
Getting elected is put above the nations national security, anything goes with these politicians. Republicans and democrats are spending us into a third world country. You do not have to be a scholar to know something is wrong, there needs to be a revolution at the polls to change the direction of our country.
Votes being bought ,bribes ,downright lies is what politics are about now.
Think about it these people are destroying the country with corrupt politics.

The problem is the masses are uninformed and eaisly swayed! Politics are all about influencing one or another person to do some or do nothing. What we have at this point is a do nothing Congress. Our President is way over his head and seems to me to be a total socialist...Would be best if the Government just get out of the way and let the American poeple do what we do best.....what is that you may ask?
We americans Dream! then we have the determination to make those dreams come true!
