Here We Go Again...

Posted by Commander Bob , 16 October 2009 · 2590 views

When I was eighteen years old, one Sunday morning, just after Tet, 1968, while serving in a light weapons infantry line unit, as my Company Commander's RTO, I was required to enter a mine field to render aid to the wounded, comfort the dying, and retrieve the dead. Enemy incoming fire was reported. I was severely wounded after the 4th explosion. This began my 40+ year odyssey with the V.A.

***Up-Date*** 2009...I should have never drank that Agent Orange Kool-Aid in Vietnam. I had neck cancer in 2008... Although there are many side effects to the cancer treatments, I am now feeling that I can get back on the horse. My wife and I are planning a trip around the world, and visit the few places, we haven't seen yet. October 1st, my oncologist read my PET scan results. It reports that "...this is suspicious for recurrent malignancy." Yesterday I had CT scan done, and next Thursday I am scheduled for day surgery and a biopsy. Since there is no evidence of distant metaphysis, this time, I am very optimistic that we are just dealing with a false positive on the PET scan. I'll know by the end of next week.

I'll keep you posted.

Cmdr. Bob

***Up-Date*** June 2, 2011, I have just completed my third year anniversary cancer check-up. CAT & PET scans, as well as other procedures, all came back Cancer Free...

***Up-Date*** August 16,2012, The Buds are Back!!!

After the 2008, cancer treatments etc., along with patches of hair loss, my taste buds were zapped. Gone... Everything tasted like cardboard. This was one of the traditional five senses, that I just wrote off, and adjusted to, accordingly. So, over the last 4 1/2 years, I grew accustomed to not being able to taste food.

Then, out of the blue, over the last few weeks, my sense of taste seems to be returning. I have rediscovered food!!!

Once again, "It's great to be alive".

Everything went well with the day surgery, today. The surgeon says it looked clean in there. He took five biopsies. I'll know in a few days.

The Oncologist's office just called and told that my kidneys appear to be damaged. Could be from all the chemo and radiation, Pet &CT scans. I'll know more Friday. Here we go again...

My PCP doctor referred me to a Nephrologist today. I must say I have heard of every ologist in the book, but Nephrologist ( kidney doctor )was a new one to me. My creatinine level is 1.8, and my GFR is 49.7 ( for those in the know about such matters ). Moderate stage 3 kidney disease due to cancer treatment... I am confident that I can get this under control. I am strong and feel great. With the proper meds and a good doctor, I am ready for what ever comes my way.

Well, I had surgery 9 days ago. Had a nice size lump removed. I weigh a few pounds lighter now. The pathology report came back benign. I feel like I beat it again. It must be a cancer survivor thing??? I started wearing a watch again... I haven't done that in years. It's great to be alive. I am looking forward to the change of seasons, once again.

Reading this brought me some comfort buddy, absolutely great news. Don't be letting much grass grow under you,
you are free to travel and live life to it's fullest.
It was such a pleasure when I had the opportunity to meet
with you and Elena. Please let her know that I used up the bottle of body lotion that was in the gift set, she so thoughtfully bestowed upon me - but I saved the empty container and write CB & Elena on it with a black Sharpie marker. When I see the bottle and the note on it, is a way to help my twisted brain - remember our day :-)
Really good news - 3 years, happy anniversary.
I'll bet money that you're really an incarnate from an exotic
species, of cat : -)
