The USS Westchester County, LST 1167 was "home ported" in Yokosuka Japan for many years. During the Vietnam era, the ship routinely hauled troops, general cargo, vehicles, and ammunition to various port locations in Vietnam from Japan, the Philippines, and Okinawa. In 1967 and 1968, the ship spent considerable time "up the river" providing support to the "River Rats" as a part of TF117. (With hundreds of Army troops and boat crews, as well as several hundred tons of ammunition, and a "field" corpse cold storage unit) A major blessing in Vietnam was that the crew and troop quarters were more or less air conditioned. The ship was built around 1954, and was an "1156" class LST (Built for the Korean War.) The ship was referred to as "Ichi Ichi Rocco Nana" (1167) by the Japanese yard workers at the Yokosuka US Navy Base(Since "returned to Japanese control", although the US Navy Base is still there to the best of my knowledge). From an historical view point Yokosuka is of some importance because a good part of the WWII Japanese navy ships were built at Yokosuka, including at least one battleship.
The "WESCO" was one of the ships that I served on during the Vietnam era. This post has been edited by Chuck75: Nov 8 2009, 05:10 PM |

hello, i don't know what the deal is with this uss westchester. i have been contacted before about it and do not really care for the topic but allow the army/navy school of the americas professor tell you what i know but you do not know, what you will never hear elsewhere cause others don't want you to know, but i will tell you what i found out and believe is true. the uss west finished its job in vietnam on july 18, 1973. then it travelled around the asia area for a little, hung out, hit a few spots in the phillipines and japan until we said we don't need this shi.(please fill in 1 of 2 letters) anymore and decommissioned it there on aug 30,1973. then it took them 3 whole months, must have had a blast in japan, until they arrived at the graveyard in pugent sound on nov 30, 1973. so it sat there for a whole year rotting away until we ripped off and sold it to some turkeys(turkey) in aug 1974. so then it sailed around in circles in the med sea for 9 years waving to people in cyprus, syria, and their own city of mersin, whose people thought it was their own private guardian. anyway, in dec 1983 it is said that aircraft from one of its buddies, the uss enterprise blew the crap out of it thinking it was a ship from a country near turkey, can't say more. so it is at the bottom of the med sea close to mersin(still guarding them, ha ha). now here's the good part. turkey decommissioned it in 2005, wow, about time. if you know more or something else please explain so mr simes can relax. (IMG:http://www.hadit.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) (IMG:http://www.hadit.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) hello, i am sorry for writing this the way i did. i am very sorry if i offended anyone and hope that you will forgive me if i did. the uss westchester was a magnificent ship while it was part of our navy. my friend who was a soldier in vietnam during the 60's told me that there was no uss west there in the 60's, said it must have been there in the 70's after he left. and that is also what i remember reading, that it was there in the 70's for a clean up and left in 1973. i never knew that it was in vietnam many times before the 70's and that it lost many men and received many awards. i am sorry for and saddened about the ship's losses and feel bad about writing things before getting the correct facts from better sources. sorry! now i have a new project. what did the ship do after it left vietnam, what did it do in turkey, and where is it? i still believe that it no longer exists but i will find out for sure and what happened to it.
