That's one of the first things that I did, was obtain my SMR's, specifically from Balboa Navy Hospital, and from the archives in St. Louis. I did this, MYSELF, to keep from having to wait on the Gooberment to do it. I knew that they would have to have these records, so I was pro-active in obtaining them, for THEM. At least I knew what they had, and when they had 'em. But, no, it does not surprise me that they requested them for your claim.

If this is your original claim then the VA has to request your SMR's from St. Louis. It will take a while. If you already are rated for something else their is no need for them to request your records. You should get a copy of your SMR's and your personnel file.

I did the same as Larry, I requested my records to reduce the wait time..

Your profile shows you are currently 70% SC'd.
I don't know of a way for that to happen without them already having your SMR's.
So, I ditto what john999 said.

If you are a retiree your records are maintained in St Lewis. Also, I there has been an extended period of inactivity on your cliam it is transfered to St Lewis for storage. It should have been sent for in the Development stage.

They have lost them or they could be just putting yout claim off unti the fiscal year starts on Oct, 1. You can get your records from the national personnel records center in St.Louis and you can do this on the computer. It takes a few weeks but you could be surprised at the info they contain. I wish you the best of luck and thanks for your service. A veteran never gives up.
