Had an appt with my pdoc (psych doc) yesterday and she had put me on risperodone a few weeks ago and is very concerned about Tardive Dyskinesia. At my appt yesterday she had me perform a series of tests (body movements) over and over to check for this. I am very glad she is being so diligent---a positive change indeed for the Dayton VA mental health pdocs.
She also warns me each time about taking my migraine meds with the Zoloft because they cannot be taken together....very bad things happen. So I just have to hope I don't get a migraine in the mornings.

My question....anyone else ever had such a "test" for this disorder by their pdoc?? Just curious.

Yes, you are taking a powerful anti-psychotic med. That side effect your doctor is worried about is very serious. You can have involuntary movements from the drug and they can be permanent. I know someone with that problem. It is usually from long time use of the thorazine type drugs. I have seen a person with this disorder and they have constant jerking motions of their body.

I'm RX'd the same thing but under the name Seroquel or Quetiapine.
The online info says it mainly RX'd for schizophrenia, but may also be
RX'd for other uses.

I am actually RX'd it in 2 different strengths

1) During the daytime - 25 MG TAB
Take one 2 X a day for Mood.

2) Night time - 200 MG TAB
Take one tablet by mouth at bedtime for Mood -
for Nightmares may take additional one-half tablet for
Nightmare Exacerbation.

I have maintained this RX for several years.
I have more than 15 additional RX'd meds daily
one of which is Phenytoin and it is on the list for
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Risperidone.
What this does is lower my blood levels of Phenytoin which
reduces my seizure thresholds - so I have to play with these meds
here and there just to stay in check.

I have done well with it although I feel some of my meds
contribute to weight gain.

I, as many of us, have so many POSSIBLE drug and food interactions
it kind of like playing russian roulette... but hey - I'm still kicking - lol.

The dose I am on is so teeny-tiny. But my body is so freakin' med sensitive. I take it at night along with my trazodone and if I'm not in bed within 15 minutes I'll be out wherever I happen to fall!!! But it's beginning to help keep the "shadow people" away (oh....you don't want to know), and the voices.

She did increase my Zoloft--guess I'm still not "happy enough".

What would make me happy is if those voices would whisper some winning lottery numbers in my ear.....that would be a good start...
