Does SSD send out checks anymore or do you have to have an account for the money to go into? What happens if you don't have a checking account or savings account???
Thanks

You should check with SS but I believe that they still send out checks they just make it difficult to do that. They won't say it but I think that it prevents overpayment when people die as bank accounts are usually closed in days

I was getting my SSD checks on the second Wednesday of the month but I switched to direct deposit. It would seem to me that you would have a hard time cashing your SSD check without an account of some kind. Either savings or checking. I thing Wal Mart will cash a check for a fee.
I liked to touch or handle the check but the security of direct deposit feels better to me now.

Direct deposit saves the gov. a lot of money too.
I do all of my banking online, so direct deposit makes sense for Me.
We have several businesses that will cash for a fee.

The Social Security Administration, heck, even the Dept of Veterans Affairs, on their "official" websites, when you are filling out your claim applications, they will tell you that you "have to have" either a bank account or some sort of program that they have devised whereby you get a deposit and not a paper check.
They tell you that............BUT, if you really WANT a paper check....then they have to send it to you.
Having said that, why anyone would actually prefer a paper check as opposed to an electronic funds deposit, escapes me.
Using myself as a good example:
There is a young fellow that lives two houses down from our house, who is, shall we say, not quite right, in the head.
He likes to get mail. He gets a "paper check" from some department of the Texas or Federal government.
He just can't remember, sometimes, which mailbox is HIS. He lives with his mom and dad, he's the same age as our son, 25. So, when he gets his "check" out of the wrong (our) mailbox........his mom usually manages to get it back to us. This check is anything in an envelope that looks like it could actually BE a check, to him.
So, yes, I like direct deposit.........
And, I thank our Lord that we have a son studying for his masters degree.........and how fortunate we are, and how blessed.

Walmart has its own bank inside. They will give an account to anyone. I opened an account with them to get an emergency debit card for the kids. I leave money in the account when ever I am out of town. It never fails, go out of town and the kids need money. When I say kids, they are 21 and 29.

I am leaving your post as is but will ask you to read the rules carefully.
Many Banks charge for checks but if you call around many will cash government issued checks with no fees.

Question 1:
Yes
Question 2:
What planet did you say you are from? Last time I was visiting the moon I passed by a Bank of America. It's 2 miles south of the Sea of Tranquility. They don't hit you for a service charge even if you don't bank with them as long as you are from Earth. :D
If you do not have an account with BOA - there is a charge to cash a check.
