How to get your questions answered. A few observations, and requests of all members. All folks who come here are volunteers who do this on their own time and their own dime.To avoid burning out our best contributors please follow these guidelinesf you are reading a post and it reminds you of a question you want to ask, start a new topic, if you place your question in someone thread it will be difficult to distinguish your question from the original poster, you will get better results posting a new topic with your question. 1. Before Posting please do a search and see if your question has already been answered. If you find the answer print it out and put it in a file to use as a reference file, I find this helpful myself. 2. If you can not find the answer and you do post a question, please print out those answers and refer to them to avoid duplicate questions. 3. Refer to the Frequently Asked Questions4. Duplicate questions will come up from time to time but the keeping them to the minimum will lighten the load on the regular volunteers.5. Respect folks privacy do not request their personal phone numbers for claims help, it is inappropriate and not why they are here.6. • A bit about Tbird and HadIt.com for those who've asked...

The following is on my About page, but some have been asking how this all happened. So here is my little story. Tbird US Navy 1983 – 1990 E-6 HadIt.com the website domain registered Jan 20, 1997 the domain is registered and paid for through Jan 21, 2023 at which time I plan to register it for another 15 years Lord willing and the creek don't rise. I guess the best place to start is Jan 1991; I had gotten out of the navy Dec 1990. At my separation seminar, there was a DAV rep Jim Milton he told us to bring our medical records in and he would look through them for us and let us know if we should file a claim with the VA. Well, bless his heart, he opened my medical file, reads the first insert, looks me straight in the eye, and says you will be 50% for the rest of your life and he would file the claim for me. 50% was for surgery I had in the service. True to his word he met with me and talked with me for a long time filled out my paper work and urged me to file for PTSD. I would not file the PTSD claim, nor even discuss it. By Feb 1991 I had moved to the San Francisco bay area and was staying at a friends apartment and pretty much I was just a puddle. In desperation one night I called suicide hot line, I had no job, no idea about going to the VA. They talked with me for a long time and explained to me that I could go to the local VA hospital even if I did not have insurance. Now, I know what you are thinking if I was 50% why didn't I just go to the VA in the first place, two reasons 1, this was Feb 1991 and the 50% didn't come till May and 2, even if it had come through it is unlikely that I would have had the mental acuity at the time to put the two together. I relate this here because it is where so many of our brothers and sisters are coming from, perhaps where you started. Fuzzy and unsure, in pain and sometimes homeless they come to the VA hospital for help. And that is where I ended up. Up to the pysch ward I went, blah, blah, blah, a few days later I was released with a promise of a call from the out patient program, which I would soon be entering. Blah, blah, blah, after many missed communications, and no call backs I was at the Day Hospital everyday M-F. And this brothers and sisters is where I began to learn and formulate my plan for HadIt.com. Veterans, veterans everywhere…I spent a year in the day hospital and about another year at a sheltered workshop before I got back on my feet. So I just talked to veterans everyday waiting for appointments, waiting for prescriptions, waiting for a vet rep and I started to learn the system. While in the navy I was data analyst and had to learn a 5 volume manual and just about anything you were suppose to do was in that manual. So I figured there must be a manual on how to do a VA claim or at the very least regulations. So I found out about the Code of Federal Regulations, United States Code, Veterans Affairs Manuals and so on and so forth. Of course this was 1991/1992 I was living in a tiny studio apartment in a particularly bad neighborhood, working in a sheltered workshop making a nickel per envelope I stuffed throw in PTSD and you will see that it was a difficult task for me to get somewhere where they had copies of these, let alone that they would let me look at. And there was so much knowledge around me, it was like the gold rush in those days, I could just sit on a bench a veteran would sit down next to me a little conversation later I had another nugget, I made copious notes. Phone numbers to call, ask for this guy or that guy he'll give you the straight scoop and they'd slip me a piece of paper with a number on it. You want to read this regulation or that one and another slip of paper into my hand. I spent a lot of time on those benches watching the squirrels they gathered their nuts and I gathered mine :) So I'm thinking I could put a little handbook together print it out and hand it out at the VA. Or perhaps fliers. Still formulating, time goes by, 1994/1995 I am being treated for PTSD regularly and doing and feeling much better and I go to work for a company as a marketing systems analyst and I discover the internet. Well let me tell you that was perhaps one of the most significant life changing events I have ever experienced. And I might add finally a positive one :) It seemed only natural to me that surely there must be a website that contained all the knowledge I wanted, well as it turned out not so much, lots of stuff but I wanted to get straight to the claims information and there was a lot of stuff to wade through to get to it. So taking my lesson from the squirrels earlier I started to gather, gather, gather…and learn HTML and work as a marketing systems analyst and work my claim. 1996/1997 major PTSD cork blows and unemployed. Working my claim, working the website. 20 Jan 1997 register HadIt.com domain name right after getting off the phone with the VA and saying I've had it with this. As fate would have it the old DAV board goes down just as mine opens up and folks start to wander in. So HadIt.com has two main components the website which supports the discussion board with links, articles, research resources etc. The website starts to grow, I can't tell you how many times I had to switch servers for space and features. I continue on a downward trend and in 1998 ended up back home in St Louis living in my sisters basement in therapy and working it, I swear I would have swung a dead chicken around my head at midnight naked if I thought it would have helped. The website continued to do great during this time, I just stayed in the basement bought new software, new books, and learned how to make things work and I continued to use this knowledge to make HadIt.com better. My 100% finally came through from the VA and I had a friend who is an advocate who helped me thru my SSDI claim, he was literally at my side thru the entire process and that came through for me. My therapist and sister continued to try and get me to leave the basement, but to no avail. At some point in 1998 or 1999 I put a counter on the website and was shocked to discover how many visitors we were getting. Time goes by my sister gets married and I move from the basement to the upstairs, there is much celebration that Aunt T is living in the light again. More time goes by and I settle into my life in St Louis and spend more time on the site trying new things, finding more information. 2003 I buy my own home VA loan. For years now I have just considered HadIt.com my job and I get up every morning go to the office and work for several hours, take an afternoon break and see where the rest of day takes me. I have a place in the office to use the computer and a comfortable to place to read journals and articles and take notes. Blah, blah, blah so that is my story and HadIt.com's intertwined.

I was reading that there is a bill trying to be passed allowing space a travel for disabled vets. Has anyone heard if this bill was passed or may get passed? Also, are we allowed to use billeting on bases or places like Bellows Beach in Hawaii? Vicky

Uhm, sweettator are you on planet earth. Never heard anything about disabled vet getting a free ride to the mothersip. Geez, it cost several hundred k, just to get your ashes spread in space. Maybe its a ploy and they will gives a one way ticket into space on a freight spaceship (called ship-o-plenty). to never return to collect any bennys. Think I;ll stay on earth and consolult with major tom. :D

T&B,

Not sure if your post is serious or not since you were in the Army but just in case you were serious - I think sweettator meant Space A as in Space Available which is what we all had (whether or not we knew it, I was on a post that had an Air Base next to it) when we were on active duty. We could ride Space A on the Air Force planes if there was a seat available on the plane. Lots of GIs would use it to go over to Germany. The only problem with Space A is that you may get somewhere and not have a flight with any Space A seats on it when you want to get home so you may have to purchase a ticket home.

However, if you are flexible in your departure and return and don't mind riding in a red net seat then Space A travel is a great way to see the world.

Go Army!

Well, I don't exactly know how I did it......but, I guess it is "at the discretion of the Base Commander"....but, the wife and I just went to Las Vegas a couple of months ago on the General's Gulfstream. I was just out at the Fort Worth NAS and Joint Reserve Base and mentioned that I wish we could just leave town for the weekend and the next thing I know this friend of mine has me standing at the counter with this really nice E5. All I had to show 'em was my MWR card and, bingo, the next day (Friday) we took off at 0800 for Nellis AFB and returned at 1800 on Sunday. No net seats on that bird. Wife made me put on a coat and tie.

I could get used to bein' a O8......nice work if you can get it.

The bill is being put up again this year I read it in this weeks AF time. It is being sponsierd by Sen Daniel Inouye D-Hawaii. The bill he is sponsring is S66 for space avabile flights. You can connect your senators and ask them to sign on. I don't see what the problem is is does not cost the DOD a dime to allow a disabled Vet Space A travel. You will be a priorty six like us ROFS from the miltiray(retired old folks) who are retired. This bill might have a chance this year due to the good senator now being made the chairmen of the apporaptions commitee which overseas all funding for federal agenceys.

TS,

I was half serious and joking around, I did not see the "a" between space and travel. Sorry sweettator, I guess the jokes on me. As they say smarty, smarty had a party and nobody came. I have a buddy who uses the stand by on military flights and also the military vacation and base facilities. Him and his wife love it and very inexpnsive. Again sorry for the misunderstanding.

I have used Space A on many flights, over the years. When I was active in the veterans community, I would fly up to DC for meetings etc. Once, the pilot let me sit in the jump seat, up in the cock pit when he landed at Andrews AFB. What a trip. Great memories.

Yes, your are allow to use billeting. All you have to do is show your ID card provided to TDIU and 100% P&T veterans.

Actually, it depends on the military base. Some allow use of the transit quarters others don't. I have used them since I retired and have been turned away from many of them. Fort Gorden comes to mind as one that would not allow a retiree to use the billits. Fort Jackson on the other hand allowed use, but the ones we were assigned to were so worn out and dirty that we moved off base the next day.....

Randolpha AFB has nice transit quarters, complete with a mini kitchen at a very low cost. Ft Sam Houston forget it never happen GI..... too many soldiers not enougth transit quarters....

so as I said it depends on the base.....

AS for space A. It is very hard to find a flight when you need it, when you find one, there seems to be a lot of soldiers , and retirees trying to get on a flight. It is not true that giving space a to 100% or TDIU veterans would not cost the government any more money. These flights burn up fuel somewhat in part to the weight of the cargo, or passengers, and we all know what fuel cost these days. I for one hope that this is one benefit that is not given to 100% or TDIU because as I said there never seems to be enought seats for the retirees and active duty soldiers when we need one. I have spent many a day burning time because I could not get a flight out due to a number of reasons, no available seat being the reason most of the time. ..

BTW, most Navy stations have what are called Navy Lodge's.

All of them that I have seen have been less than 5 years old, and very reminiscent of a very nice Best Western Hotel.

There was a concert over in Ft. Worth here a while back, and it was very late when it was over, so I had stopped on our way to the concert to check, and yes, they had several rooms available. So we just stopped there and spent the night instead of driving home. Cost, I believe, was $35.

I think I chimned in about Space 'A' in another thread.. a while back..

while i was active duty I flew a lot of Space A. The downside is being stuck at crappy palces for up to 3 days waiting for a flight,, and being bumped.. sometimes there is no lodging and you must hang around a really craphole in misreable weather.. other times, you would gewt going on a huge C-5 with only 5 people.. other times crowded a/c, other times a lear jet with 3 people.. it viried all the time.. back then it was free then, they bumped the price to about $10.00 to Europe.. which included a flight kitchen sack meal..

MY big problem, if I ever get my full benefits , if I get the 100% SC- P%T, is that it would be nice to travel, I am in extremely poor health... I need access to a local VA clinic, hospital within short nitice...

The accomadations can be from nice to craphole..

but hey, the price is usually right!

I wil find out soon if I get my full 100%. But, I can't imagine flying around in my condition,, taking morphine, in sever epain, and chronic fatigue.. but I can dream..

each military guest house depends on space being available and the rules from the Commanding Officer most allow it a few won't it is always best to call ahead

space A flights will always leave some people jealous active duty retirees etc if they give it to 100% or even TDIU vets then vets that are rated from 10% to 90% will be jealous regardless of how much it cost to fly the plane if it is going from point a to point b and it has empty seats and there is an authorized body that wants a ride on it I could care less who gets it unless someone has a priority travel authorization and the govt says they get the seat it should be first come first served on standby by flights

it's cheaper and more dependable to buy the cheap seats a month ahead of time usually flying space a you spend more money on guest rooms and food in restaurants than you would just buying a seat on a plane I bought my brother a round trip from LA to Atlanta 129 each way he's coming in January he thought about riding the bus so it would be cheaper I asked him how much he thought the bus ticket was and all those meals for 3 days each way the discount plane tickets are a LOT cheaper

The use of base MWR facilities by 100% disabled veterans is a "local policy" matter. Availability is another issue. (Lodging and so forth)

Space "A" travel was proposed, and I haven't heard of any decisions. Space "A" availability has always been a problem, even for those on leave with orders.

(Not what you wanted to hear!)

You can use the web to locate phone numbers of various bases and facilities, and some details. http://bellowsafs.com/Default.asp seems to be a place to start

I was reading that there is a bill trying to be passed allowing space a travel for disabled vets. Has anyone heard if this bill was passed or may get passed? Also, are we allowed to use billeting on bases or places like Bellows Beach in Hawaii? Vicky

You got two chumps/moderators at Military.com forum who are tying anchors to this issue, so don't go there. And they slam Vets looking for help half the time.

There is a new bill. Contact your Reps to get this out of commitee and signed. This is what I sent to the Armed Services Committee. And if you go to Open Congress web site, it will help you contact ALL your Congress reps at once...

"Honorable Chairman Howard P. McKeon

Armed Services Committee

2120 Rayburn House Office Bldg.
Washington, DC 20515

Reference: H.R.164 Space Availability travel for service connected Permanently Disabled Veterans

Versions of this bill have been floating around the halls of Congress for decades. I pray that you will move it out of committee
and onto the floor.

Taking care of Disabled Veterans who were not medically retired from their service, yet sustained injuries severe enough to warrant a permanent and total rating is a small benefit to extend to us. Many of us pine for our days in the Military and traveling to see the wonders of our sacrifices, here and around the world.

The aircraft we would be able to fly on give priority to our Nation’s defense and we would only be occupying seats which would have been left empty. It is hard to imagine why this has not been enacted before.

Your endorsement and help in passing this legislation would certainly be another accolade you could cite as your support for America’s permanently Disabled Veterans. And it would be nearly cost-free."

After doing more research this morning, I found that an actual bill was brought before the House in June and was passed to amend the Space A Travel Program to include 100% PT SC DAV. :) Woohoo! Now, everyone, get on the horn, emails, websites and write your state Senators telling them how much this would mean for them to pass this bill when it finally comes up for a vote in the Senate. Now is the time to act!
