Military Superfund Sites
Camp Lejeune and former MCAS El Toro are not the only military bases on the EPA Superfund list.
If you were stationed at any of the following bases, you may want to check the contaminants of concern and the related health effects.
Our government has no policy to inform veterans of their possible exposure to these contaminants and their health effects. You may even want to share this information with your medical care provider.

For our military, dependents, civilian workers and in many cases those living near these bases, the volume of toxic chemicals in the soil and groundwater poses a serious environmental health risk.
When I was a dependent, I lived on Ft.Dix, NJ. I also lived right across the street from Ft. McClellan.
When I was on active duty, I lived at Ft. Meade, MD from 1990 to 1991. We frequently did PT at the airfield noted here as being contaminated with benzene. Also, I was initially diagnosed with asthma at Ft. Meade and that's when my health problems started. Nice.
Does anyone know if there is a list of contaminated overseas bases? I spent 10 years at various bases in Germany and a couple of years in Korea. I know some of the buildings I lived and worked in were built in the 40's, 50's, and 60's, before asbestos or other contaminants were recognized as being dangerous.

Here's how I started looking into it by using the EPA web site and google:
1. Looked up each site where I lived or was stationed while in service or as a dependent.
2. Identified the contaminant site and it's known health effects
3. Identified the cleanup schedule, primarily to see if I was there when or after the contamination occurred.
4. Identified the type of contact I might have had with the contaminant
5. If specific locations at the sites were identified as being contaminated, I did a google map search to identify where the spills occurred.
6. Identified the possibility of buddy letters.
In this case, here's my approach:
1. Fort Meade, MD
2. Benzene in groundwater at a nearby named airfield on base. Benzene targets liver, kidney, lung, heart and the brain, is a known carcinogen, and can DNA strand breaks, chromosomal damage etc...
3. EPA site says cleanup started in 1991. I was on base from mid-1990 through the end of 1991. 4. We did PT there a lot. Exercises included sit ups, push ups, running, and general exercises. We would go there rain, snow, or shine to exercise.
5. My barracks and office were just a couple of minutes away from the old airfield.
6. I remember several buddies when stationed there. One of them came from a town a few hours from here. It almost seems like it would be worth a shot to send him an email to see how he is doing.
In the end, we still need to identify a link between exposure and current illnesses. I developed asthma and severe allergies while at the base. It came out of nowhere shortly after I arrived. Now I have atrial afib (controlled with medication), an atrial enlargement, and hypertension. How does one even start to approach this and how does it get claimed? I am maxed out on my allergy percentage. I have filed for an increase in my asthma too.
Anyone else have any other thoughts to share?

I am adding some new material that has relevance to our subject and also I would like to remind everyone that I have posted under Agent Orange Category here with other Chemical issues facing our troops and Vets. Thanks again for sounding the alarm and posting more information. Jerrel and I know what Fort Greely and Project 112 are about and have the physical diseases to prove the contact by our soldiers.
NEVER GIVE UP. God Bless, C.C.
