How to get your questions answered. A few observations, and requests of all members. All folks who come here are volunteers who do this on their own time and their own dime.To avoid burning out our best contributors please follow these guidelinesf you are reading a post and it reminds you of a question you want to ask, start a new topic, if you place your question in someone thread it will be difficult to distinguish your question from the original poster, you will get better results posting a new topic with your question. 1. Before Posting please do a search and see if your question has already been answered. If you find the answer print it out and put it in a file to use as a reference file, I find this helpful myself. 2. If you can not find the answer and you do post a question, please print out those answers and refer to them to avoid duplicate questions. 3. Refer to the Frequently Asked Questions4. Duplicate questions will come up from time to time but the keeping them to the minimum will lighten the load on the regular volunteers.5. Respect folks privacy do not request their personal phone numbers for claims help, it is inappropriate and not why they are here.6. Keep the topics focused on veterans issues, in closing Search first Search ... Ask second.it may save a lot of time or at the very least enlighten you.

    • A bit about Tbird and HadIt.com for those who've asked...

The following is on my About page, but some have been asking how this all happened. So here is my little story. Tbird US Navy 1983 – 1990 E-6 HadIt.com the website domain registered Jan 20, 1997 the domain is registered and paid for through Jan 21, 2023 at which time I plan to register it for another 15 years Lord willing and the creek don't rise. I guess the best place to start is Jan 1991; I had gotten out of the navy Dec 1990. At my separation seminar, there was a DAV rep Jim Milton he told us to bring our medical records in and he would look through them for us and let us know if we should file a claim with the VA. Well, bless his heart, he opened my medical file, reads the first insert, looks me straight in the eye, and says you will be 50% for the rest of your life and he would file the claim for me. 50% was for surgery I had in the service. True to his word he met with me and talked with me for a long time filled out my paper work and urged me to file for PTSD. I would not file the PTSD claim, nor even discuss it. By Feb 1991 I had moved to the San Francisco bay area and was staying at a friends apartment and pretty much I was just a puddle. In desperation one night I called suicide hot line, I had no job, no idea about going to the VA. They talked with me for a long time and explained to me that I could go to the local VA hospital even if I did not have insurance. Now, I know what you are thinking if I was 50% why didn't I just go to the VA in the first place, two reasons 1, this was Feb 1991 and the 50% didn't come till May and 2, even if it had come through it is unlikely that I would have had the mental acuity at the time to put the two together. I relate this here because it is where so many of our brothers and sisters are coming from, perhaps where you started. Fuzzy and unsure, in pain and sometimes homeless they come to the VA hospital for help. And that is where I ended up. Up to the pysch ward I went, blah, blah, blah, a few days later I was released with a promise of a call from the out patient program, which I would soon be entering. Blah, blah, blah, after many missed communications, and no call backs I was at the Day Hospital everyday M-F. And this brothers and sisters is where I began to learn and formulate my plan for HadIt.com. Veterans, veterans everywhere…I spent a year in the day hospital and about another year at a sheltered workshop before I got back on my feet. So I just talked to veterans everyday waiting for appointments, waiting for prescriptions, waiting for a vet rep and I started to learn the system. While in the navy I was data analyst and had to learn a 5 volume manual and just about anything you were suppose to do was in that manual. So I figured there must be a manual on how to do a VA claim or at the very least regulations. So I found out about the Code of Federal Regulations, United States Code, Veterans Affairs Manuals and so on and so forth. Of course this was 1991/1992 I was living in a tiny studio apartment in a particularly bad neighborhood, working in a sheltered workshop making a nickel per envelope I stuffed throw in PTSD and you will see that it was a difficult task for me to get somewhere where they had copies of these, let alone that they would let me look at. And there was so much knowledge around me, it was like the gold rush in those days, I could just sit on a bench a veteran would sit down next to me a little conversation later I had another nugget, I made copious notes. Phone numbers to call, ask for this guy or that guy he'll give you the straight scoop and they'd slip me a piece of paper with a number on it. You want to read this regulation or that one and another slip of paper into my hand. I spent a lot of time on those benches watching the squirrels they gathered their nuts and I gathered mine :) So I'm thinking I could put a little handbook together print it out and hand it out at the VA. Or perhaps fliers. Still formulating, time goes by, 1994/1995 I am being treated for PTSD regularly and doing and feeling much better and I go to work for a company as a marketing systems analyst and I discover the internet. Well let me tell you that was perhaps one of the most significant life changing events I have ever experienced. And I might add finally a positive one :) It seemed only natural to me that surely there must be a website that contained all the knowledge I wanted, well as it turned out not so much, lots of stuff but I wanted to get straight to the claims information and there was a lot of stuff to wade through to get to it. So taking my lesson from the squirrels earlier I started to gather, gather, gather…and learn HTML and work as a marketing systems analyst and work my claim. 1996/1997 major PTSD cork blows and unemployed. Working my claim, working the website. 20 Jan 1997 register HadIt.com domain name right after getting off the phone with the VA and saying I've had it with this. As fate would have it the old DAV board goes down just as mine opens up and folks start to wander in. So HadIt.com has two main components the website which supports the discussion board with links, articles, research resources etc. The website starts to grow, I can't tell you how many times I had to switch servers for space and features. I continue on a downward trend and in 1998 ended up back home in St Louis living in my sisters basement in therapy and working it, I swear I would have swung a dead chicken around my head at midnight naked if I thought it would have helped. The website continued to do great during this time, I just stayed in the basement bought new software, new books, and learned how to make things work and I continued to use this knowledge to make HadIt.com better. My 100% finally came through from the VA and I had a friend who is an advocate who helped me thru my SSDI claim, he was literally at my side thru the entire process and that came through for me. My therapist and sister continued to try and get me to leave the basement, but to no avail. At some point in 1998 or 1999 I put a counter on the website and was shocked to discover how many visitors we were getting. Time goes by my sister gets married and I move from the basement to the upstairs, there is much celebration that Aunt T is living in the light again. More time goes by and I settle into my life in St Louis and spend more time on the site trying new things, finding more information. 2003 I buy my own home VA loan. For years now I have just considered HadIt.com my job and I get up every morning go to the office and work for several hours, take an afternoon break and see where the rest of day takes me. I have a place in the office to use the computer and a comfortable to place to read journals and articles and take notes. Blah, blah, blah so that is my story and HadIt.com's intertwined.

The Reno Regional office is not the worst, but it is #48 out of the 58 other regional offices. I often look at the Monday Workload Reports, which I've noticed that the Reno office has had claims pending over 125-days by 60% for more than 2-years. It's currently over 70%.

Filed Reconsideration Aug 2011, went to Preparation for Decision in the beginning of Feb 2012. Called one week for status and was informed that this office's average timeframe in P for D was 92 days; called 1 week later to inquire about monthly payment issue, and 'while I got you on the phone' asked for status update, and was then told that the average timeframe in P for D was now 107 days. Impressive, in one week, they are backlogged by 2 more weeks.

My oponion of the Reno Regional Office is: It's like putting an SOS message in a bottle and hoping one day somebody will read it and send help.

Just pulled the latest and greatest from the Monday Report

Percent pending over 125 days has went up by about 2.5% in the past 2 months. Wonder how many claims are getting completed per month that's the magic number that would help to understand the process better.

I just got a call from the Reno Regional Office Information Officer and during the conversation he told me that on average, Reno claims are taking 2 years. He also said that they have over 12,000 claims with only 50 people working them. Out of 12,000, my husbands claim in #1,250 (or thereabouts). This claim has been open since 8/11. I find this amazing that the VA finds it reasonable to let only 50 people work 12,000 claims (and no new hires). That's 240 per person. How many could a person possible work in a day?

While watching the hearings I saw Congressman Amodei question Hickey as to why Reno RO is the only RO that has DECREASED it's staff and budget. No answer was given due to the 5minute time restraint. grrrrrrr.....

Hickey is supposed to visit Reno RO next month.

maybe the VA should take some of this money that they receive in bonuses and hire more adjudicators for this office. Wow, what a concept!!!!

Listen Up, nothing good to say about the Reno RO.

They rejected every claim i made at their office, caused me to have to go through all the appeals process.

Managed to screw me out of 50% of my back pay, which almost cost me my claim.

DO NOT TRUST ANY SERVICE OFFICERS CONNECTED TO VARO RENO!!!!!

Finally won my 100% Service Connected, in spite of their every attempt to block or deny me.

After receiving my upgrade, i promptly Retired Overseas.

But Reno RO, 6 Years later, in their Bull Dog Style of Forever Chewing on the Bone,

decided that i needed to have a re-exam, never mind i am out country or what it would cost me just to get there.

Luckily i found out that being overseas, i could have my file sent to the Foreign Medical Program administered by the HAC.

So if a Exam is really needed, they can provide someone local and will foot the bill.

Been Months now and the FMP do not seem to feel i need a re-exam.

So for what it is worth, If you can move your case DO IT!!

They got a Good Old Boy's Club going and your not in it!!!

The time and trouble you will avoid will save you Boo koo Dollar in the end, not to mention the aggravation.

Not to be all negative,

I do want to say that the VAMC Reno is Top Notch, Great Staff and Treatment there.

Wait times and attitude not what you get most other med centers.

The VAMC is the only reason i stuck it out as long as i did.

I live in Las Vegas and have to deal with the Reno VARO and have to agree that they are terribly slow.

Last night on one of our local TV channels, an investigation has been opened up to see what the problem is.

Here is a link to it: http://www.ktnv.com/youaskweinvestigate/214773641.html .

Don't know if it will have any effect on getting claims out of the deep dark hole or not.

On a side note, I have to agree with ThaiStick about the medical side...the VAMC here in Las Vegas is the best care ever.

agree with ThaiStick.

i don't find the VAMC that good, that is, their docs would never acknowledge the civilian board cert medical doctors diagnosis. this after the VA tests came back pos i had to seek outside help just to get a diagnosis. the diagnosis certainly pointed to SC so i guess they are instructed to ignore such and try to get it labeled something else. like, "you have something, but we're not sure what it is". i had to file a claim, and reno had to agree or not. that was the only way to get the correct diagnosis on the books. which Reno agreed but they agreed in such a way i had to get a NSO to file again due to what was orginally left out by RO.

these docs even tried to discredit the IMO, and civilian doctor. SO wasn't much help either, until after the fact. then of course they jumped on the band wagon. to this day, VAMC seems more bent on trying to trip one up than say, acknowledge the disease and help with QoA. guess i ruffled some feathers, and in this town/state, they pay you back, or so it seems. some of you know what i mean.

they do have the good ol boy (or worse), environment here. i didn't actually realize that until i moved here.

if i can get it moved and get myself moved i will do so.

I had just the opposite experiance with the doctor who treats me there. She was faxed a copy of all reports on the TIA that the IMO treated me for linked to my blood pressure and the evdience of having a stem stroke earlier which made my left arm basically useless and ran with it. She had blood work, ct scan and ultra-sound done all that day and had me in to the neuro doc the next day who confirmed the findings. The entire team has been very responsive when I email or call, several times when I email I get a call back from the doctor instead of a nurse. Luckly my doc is an internal medicine specialist which helps a lot, she even takes the time to explain if she sees I don't understand. I guess I got one of the good ones, wouldn't trade her for anything.

I guess I got one of the good ones, wouldn't trade her for anything.

i think you did get one of the good ones. when i left the navy years ago, that is how the nav surgeon spoke of the VA and i would do well there. glad you have found a good one. i hear of those stories from time to time. best of luck and health

Guess it's a dart throw wherever you go.

Best thing is to make it known, good and bad, like you're doing.

@Notorios Kelley: "Best thing is to make it known, good and bad, like you're doing."

here's a link to a recent (Nov 7, 2013) NV news outlet story showing concerns of thousands of veterans in NV.

http://www.jrn.com/ktnv/news/you-ask-we-investigate/House-members-press-VA-to-clear-claims-backlog-in-Nevada-231086841.html

that may affect the quality of processing and NV VAs' assessment of veterans' issues?

Still waiting on Reno… But, I wanted to say the VA hospital here in Las Vegas has been top notch for me as well. With the exception of one NP I've had great care from the physical therapy team, to neurology and my awesome pulmonary doctor who diagnosed me with OSA and got me prescribed a CPAP in 10 minutes!

Now, if Reno would just get it's shit together we'd be set...

I put my claim in for an increase in January 2013. I got my C&P exams January 2014 and I'm now in "prep for notification" so it looks like it'll be about 14 months beginning to end for me. Not great, but much faster than some other locations.

K9,

Great to see your claim is finally moving. Hope to hear some good news soon. I had 6 C&P exams yesterday at Texas VA. Maybe we will both be lucky in the next few months. Take care and keep us posted.

Recently received my decision letter on 2 FDC's I filed last Aug. Most interestingly the decision letter came from the Ft Harrison, MT RO. Letter from the Montana office of the VSO arrived the same day stating the claim had been brokered out to that office. I received three in progress letters from the Reno RO, nothing mentioning the brokering though.

LV VAMC has been great so far!

I haven't had much direct interaction with the RO yet, but that's about to change as I'll be filing an appeal.

Sorta related...anyone had a positive experience with the VSO NV Veterans Services? basically wasted about 4 months of my time so I switched to DAV. Ended up waiting awhile due to a number of factors. They were OK at first but seem to be going in the wrong direction so we'll be parting ways.
