How to get your questions answered. A few observations, and requests of all members. All folks who come here are volunteers who do this on their own time and their own dime.To avoid burning out our best contributors please follow these guidelinesf you are reading a post and it reminds you of a question you want to ask, start a new topic, if you place your question in someone thread it will be difficult to distinguish your question from the original poster, you will get better results posting a new topic with your question. 1. Before Posting please do a search and see if your question has already been answered. If you find the answer print it out and put it in a file to use as a reference file, I find this helpful myself. 2. If you can not find the answer and you do post a question, please print out those answers and refer to them to avoid duplicate questions. 3. Refer to the Frequently Asked Questions4. Duplicate questions will come up from time to time but the keeping them to the minimum will lighten the load on the regular volunteers.5. Respect folks privacy do not request their personal phone numbers for claims help, it is inappropriate and not why they are here.6. • A bit about Tbird and HadIt.com for those who've asked...

The following is on my About page, but some have been asking how this all happened. So here is my little story. Tbird US Navy 1983 – 1990 E-6 HadIt.com the website domain registered Jan 20, 1997 the domain is registered and paid for through Jan 21, 2023 at which time I plan to register it for another 15 years Lord willing and the creek don't rise. I guess the best place to start is Jan 1991; I had gotten out of the navy Dec 1990. At my separation seminar, there was a DAV rep Jim Milton he told us to bring our medical records in and he would look through them for us and let us know if we should file a claim with the VA. Well, bless his heart, he opened my medical file, reads the first insert, looks me straight in the eye, and says you will be 50% for the rest of your life and he would file the claim for me. 50% was for surgery I had in the service. True to his word he met with me and talked with me for a long time filled out my paper work and urged me to file for PTSD. I would not file the PTSD claim, nor even discuss it. By Feb 1991 I had moved to the San Francisco bay area and was staying at a friends apartment and pretty much I was just a puddle. In desperation one night I called suicide hot line, I had no job, no idea about going to the VA. They talked with me for a long time and explained to me that I could go to the local VA hospital even if I did not have insurance. Now, I know what you are thinking if I was 50% why didn't I just go to the VA in the first place, two reasons 1, this was Feb 1991 and the 50% didn't come till May and 2, even if it had come through it is unlikely that I would have had the mental acuity at the time to put the two together. I relate this here because it is where so many of our brothers and sisters are coming from, perhaps where you started. Fuzzy and unsure, in pain and sometimes homeless they come to the VA hospital for help. And that is where I ended up. Up to the pysch ward I went, blah, blah, blah, a few days later I was released with a promise of a call from the out patient program, which I would soon be entering. Blah, blah, blah, after many missed communications, and no call backs I was at the Day Hospital everyday M-F. And this brothers and sisters is where I began to learn and formulate my plan for HadIt.com. Veterans, veterans everywhere…I spent a year in the day hospital and about another year at a sheltered workshop before I got back on my feet. So I just talked to veterans everyday waiting for appointments, waiting for prescriptions, waiting for a vet rep and I started to learn the system. While in the navy I was data analyst and had to learn a 5 volume manual and just about anything you were suppose to do was in that manual. So I figured there must be a manual on how to do a VA claim or at the very least regulations. So I found out about the Code of Federal Regulations, United States Code, Veterans Affairs Manuals and so on and so forth. Of course this was 1991/1992 I was living in a tiny studio apartment in a particularly bad neighborhood, working in a sheltered workshop making a nickel per envelope I stuffed throw in PTSD and you will see that it was a difficult task for me to get somewhere where they had copies of these, let alone that they would let me look at. And there was so much knowledge around me, it was like the gold rush in those days, I could just sit on a bench a veteran would sit down next to me a little conversation later I had another nugget, I made copious notes. Phone numbers to call, ask for this guy or that guy he'll give you the straight scoop and they'd slip me a piece of paper with a number on it. You want to read this regulation or that one and another slip of paper into my hand. I spent a lot of time on those benches watching the squirrels they gathered their nuts and I gathered mine :) So I'm thinking I could put a little handbook together print it out and hand it out at the VA. Or perhaps fliers. Still formulating, time goes by, 1994/1995 I am being treated for PTSD regularly and doing and feeling much better and I go to work for a company as a marketing systems analyst and I discover the internet. Well let me tell you that was perhaps one of the most significant life changing events I have ever experienced. And I might add finally a positive one :) It seemed only natural to me that surely there must be a website that contained all the knowledge I wanted, well as it turned out not so much, lots of stuff but I wanted to get straight to the claims information and there was a lot of stuff to wade through to get to it. So taking my lesson from the squirrels earlier I started to gather, gather, gather…and learn HTML and work as a marketing systems analyst and work my claim. 1996/1997 major PTSD cork blows and unemployed. Working my claim, working the website. 20 Jan 1997 register HadIt.com domain name right after getting off the phone with the VA and saying I've had it with this. As fate would have it the old DAV board goes down just as mine opens up and folks start to wander in. So HadIt.com has two main components the website which supports the discussion board with links, articles, research resources etc. The website starts to grow, I can't tell you how many times I had to switch servers for space and features. I continue on a downward trend and in 1998 ended up back home in St Louis living in my sisters basement in therapy and working it, I swear I would have swung a dead chicken around my head at midnight naked if I thought it would have helped. The website continued to do great during this time, I just stayed in the basement bought new software, new books, and learned how to make things work and I continued to use this knowledge to make HadIt.com better. My 100% finally came through from the VA and I had a friend who is an advocate who helped me thru my SSDI claim, he was literally at my side thru the entire process and that came through for me. My therapist and sister continued to try and get me to leave the basement, but to no avail. At some point in 1998 or 1999 I put a counter on the website and was shocked to discover how many visitors we were getting. Time goes by my sister gets married and I move from the basement to the upstairs, there is much celebration that Aunt T is living in the light again. More time goes by and I settle into my life in St Louis and spend more time on the site trying new things, finding more information. 2003 I buy my own home VA loan. For years now I have just considered HadIt.com my job and I get up every morning go to the office and work for several hours, take an afternoon break and see where the rest of day takes me. I have a place in the office to use the computer and a comfortable to place to read journals and articles and take notes. Blah, blah, blah so that is my story and HadIt.com's intertwined.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Issues

Question

Posted · Report post

Greetings all. This is my first post, I'm so glad I found this site with so much helpful information. So here goes:

After coming back from Desert Storm, I started having digestive issues. Since I've done two more tours in Iraq, it's become very difficult. I filed a claim last year, and was told by the examiner that the bowel problems were caused by taking too many Tums antacids, and my claim was denied. I told my personal physician what the doctor said and he said he couldn't be more wrong. My doctor sent me for colonoscopy, came back negative, and the term escapes me, but they basically put a camera down your throat. They could see irritation from the acid reflux.

I recently received a va newsletter, where they have stated that Irritable bowel syndrome is on the list of being presumed service connected if you served when and where I was located.

I went to the state VA service officer and she filed for IBS again. (I didn't appeal the first decision, I have just about given up on VA)

How do I get another exam? Will this happen since I filed again? My personal doctor has diagnosed me with IBS. I've even gone so far as to take pictures of my stools with my cell phone and downloaded them to my computer. They are all time stamped, so they can see that this is a daily issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I could do?

Thank you so very much for your time. Sorry it's so long winded, my brain just doesn't work like it used to.

Your more than likely have to go thru another exam. There going to want to look if there has been any changes since your last one.

By the way, you mentioned you filed last year and was denied. How long ago did you receive your decision letter denying you? You have 1 year from the date of the letter to file an NOD. You can also file a Reconsideration letter with the new evidence you have.

What kind of BS was that examiner saying! He had no right saying that, unless of course you told him you were eating them like candy. Even then, you already had the symptom's of IBS BEFORE you started taking them. JMO, he was totally out of line. Do you know what kind of Dr he was? Sorry about the posting so much, but the more I read it, the more I didn't catch the first time.

You need to see an Internal Medicine Specialist to get a proper diagnosis. You may have GERD(Acid Reflux) and IBS, which are different but can cause serious problems. As for your private doctor diagnosing you with IBS, you need to file a NOD. Yes, it could take years but since you have the diagnosis, VA should award the claim. GERD(Acid Reflux) + IBS can get you a higher rating than just IBS alone.

after 20 years of suffering in HELL, in severe agony, while my intestines rotted away with a 5 inch cyst on my pancreas leaking poisonous fluids and sacs.. which broke and leaking all ove rmy guts in the operating room... for 2x in one weeks

if he wanted to know, less than one year before the exam I was in a va hospital bed fighting for my life.. he could have easuly ordered more copies of my medical records (seriously, there are boxes and reams of extremely rdetailed records of of breathe I took... for that whoe year.. while I fought for my life int he hospital bed while doctors and surgeons, and every frakkin nurse ont he 3rd floor worked on keeping me alive... he could have spent one year reading the records..... I sent the VA claims my records... plus they can probably get them on dvd.... to make reading them easier... by keyword..

every frakkin day for those 56 months, eveyr morningt between 4 and 6:30 am, the doctors and surgeons and hundreds of interns from the va dn uscsd would feel my stomach, because I suffered from sepsis and infection of my intestines and pancreas, it was swollen like a backetball.. and they poked it eveyr morning,, and had to find out if the necrosis and lack of food had destroyed the intestines.. they had to feel and listen to find out if they had stopped working...

I was either screaming for my morphine or Dlaudid, begging for pain relief, and also had a pain pump to squeeze the trigger...

the 12 bags of iv's with infection fighting drugs, food, and many drugs I am not sure what was in every bag.., hanging over my bed, the food running through a tube into my intestines,, PIC lines, (my viens no longer worked and the only way to access my blood and body was through valves implated into my vein/arteries..as I could not even drink more than a table spoon of water.. I could not hold objects, not reach down to touch my leggs.. or pul the blankets up if I got cold,, or move from one gurney to the next for each cat scan or x-ray I had at least 2 pet day...

i was a rag doll, and my head bobbled around like it was on a spring when I was wheeled around...

and this clown wanted to press all lover my stomach to see what a disease dying person felt like a few months later after I miraculously '[sARCASM MODE] = ON' got well enough to go home and have nurses visit me daily to get me walking, talking and eating again...

I walked into their offices sick, and waiting,, I get called, I go to the exam room, and the doctor looks at my folder,, and basically says, and what's your problem...

didn't these a-holes even read my file? where do I start..

I hope you have luck with your IBS claim, IBS can be very disabling. I suffer myself, it started in the service, I asked my service officer about it a few years ago. She said then since my service medical records say probable ibs, probable being the keyword, she didn't think I would get it. Though I was treated with the same drugs I am on now. Her opinion was I was already 100% and it wasn't worth the effort. I thought she was wrong, so I filed but after sometime I withdrew it, my bad. Don't give up. My PTSD and IBS conspire against me, but I won't let it get me down. Don't you either.

A couple of years ago 2009 I think I had to go into the hospital for a week for extreme rectal bleeding, my colon was very swollen and when they finally could do a colonoscopy they found ulcers in my colon. They thought ulcerative colitis, a few months later another colonoscopy no ulcers so they said no on ulcerative colitis and yes to IBS. I take a regiment of pills to control it as best I can. I feel for you buddy it's a hell of way to spend the day and night, day after day. Hang in.

Sorry it's so long winded, my brain just doesn't work like it used to.

only thing you can do is keep going for help,,, IBS is a catch all for 'we have no clue what's wrong' they might a more difinite cause, but soemtimes, they never find a real cause...

in the future be very careful with any surgeries,,, once a part is messed with there is no going back...

watch diet.. stress, physical labor...

if you end up taking pain meds,, and you keep needing stronger meds, addiction (dependance) is just around the corner.

your lifestyle might end up taking a huge chage in activities,, holding jobs,,, finanaces, and relationships.. just depends on how the dise progresses.

if you are lucky, it's a passing thing,, something might get fixed ,, there is always that possibility...

it usually helps to find others you can personnaly communicate with that have the same symptoms,, being alone with a problem is hard on some people...

keeping notes is a very good idea...

again, diet,,, see what works and what does not... usually people with intestinal issues map out a course, wherever they go, of where bathrooms are... some people that have intestinal problems need bathrooms very often.. so make a kit for your car.... even a chage of clothing..

if you don't need such stuff, count your blessings..

IMHO

Greetings all. I thought I had heard it all until now. I finally got a consult to see a specialist about my digestive problems. He immediately ordered a colonoscopy. They found 1 polyp and removed it, but also noted I now have hemeroids. (sic)

I had filed for IBS this time instead of stomach issues. When I first filed, I had no clue what was wrong except it wasn't right in my digestive system.

They've scheduled me appointments for C&P to increase my PTSD and for IBS.

So today in the mail, I get a stack of papers from Chicago telling me they need to know exactly why I want my PTSD increased. How can I write on paper explaining this? I'm angry all the time. I often break down crying in the middle of the day, and don't know how to stop. I haven't been to the PTSD ward at VA for quite some time. The last Dr I was assigned to had cancelled the last 3 appointments I had with her. I made an appointment with a nurse at that clinic. She told me outright that they may never fix the PTSD, only make it more bearable. I have never felt so helpless and alone in my life at that point. So I requested to be assigned to another doctor, and never heard back from them.

Then they also mention that they denied my stomach issues back in 2007. I wasn't even seen by the C&P doctor till 2010! They want me to provide proof that I've had this problem since returning from Desert Storm.

Thanks for listening.

Losing hope in this battle.

Brad

Retired44, the C & P exam doctor was probably trying to see how much of your abdomen is tender or is in pain due to your conditions.

necrotizing pancreatitits, and several complication inlcuding many cysts surrounding the pancreas full of liquid (psuedocysts) also have splenic vein thrombsosis... (spent 6 months in a va hospital bed fighting for my l ife...). Was also hsopitalizized with gastritis on active duty..

the pancreas is between the spine and the stomach,, the psduedocysts and can rupure and you can die if a cyst breaks open and the fluid leaks out... sepsis sets in.. a Cat scan and or ultra sound is the only method to see the disease without surgery..

I know, been there done that, the last thing that a person should do is apply undue pressure... looks up the disease and complications,,it eventfully leads to death, there is no cure...

morphine is the usual drug for pain control help..

if a doctor is that stupid to push on it to see if a person hurts, they should never work with people nor have a medical license..

I can't help with the PTSD but I am service connected for IBS. You said "They want me to provide proof that I've had this problem since returning from Desert Storm". This is a generic response letter that is very confusing, ignore it. You fall under the presumtive rules since you served in Desert Storm (thank you for your service) so you only have to provide proof that you have IBS. If you haven't already done so, submit the records from your private Dr showing a diagnosis of IBS. That is all the proof you need. I hope this helps.

So sorry you're dealing with this condition, let alone trying to get the VA to understand what you're going through. I've had a resection due to cancer, and am now faced with a second surgery. Once this happens, since I was finally rated for colon issues, I plan on requesting an increase. I'm not looking forward to it, but think you'll get another C&P since this is really a claim for increase v. reconsideration/NOD from the first decision. I would also send in any information from your personal physician.

"from Chicago telling me they need to know exactly why I want my PTSD increased."

as the VA increased your PTSD medications due to more symptoms?

Have you ad any employment problems since last rating?

Any legal problems since last rating? Due to anger or stuff like that.

Have you been going to a vet center?

Have you for any reason accessed any crisis hotlines regarding your PTSD?

"I often break down crying in the middle of the day, and don't know how to stop. I haven't been to the PTSD ward at VA for quite some time. The last Dr I was assigned to had cancelled the last 3 appointments I had with her. "

Can you prove that?

"I made an appointment with a nurse at that clinic. She told me outright that they may never fix the PTSD, only make it more bearable. I have never felt so helpless and alone in my life at that point. So I requested to be assigned to another doctor, and never heard back from them. "

This is all problematic if you re open your PTSD claim. The VA needs to know disabled veterans are getting continuous treatments and meds to justify their comp awards.

"Then they also mention that they denied my stomach issues back in 2007. I wasn't even seen by the C&P doctor till 2010! They want me to provide proof that I've had this problem since returning from Desert Storm."

They are looking here for the same type of evidence as for the PTSD claim:

Documented medical evidence that you have had a current physical disability -the stomach problem)since returning from the Gulf War.
