Medicare Advantage enrollment started Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7, so veterans have until then to enroll in a new plan or change their existing one.
Veterans can sign up, inquire and apply for them throughout the year to find out if they’re eligible through the VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) healthcare system.
The secretary of defense recognized as recently as 2014 that many veterans were given dishonorable or other than honorable discharges from the military after Vietnam because of behavior that was unrecognized at the time as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). If veterans going back to the Vietnam era have less-than-honorable discharges because of behavior that was likely the result of post-traumatic stress disorder or a traumatic brain injury, they can apply for a discharge upgrade. They can also apply to the Veterans Affairs for a character of discharge review. This, regardless of discharge upgrade opportunities, gives them access to healthcare from the VA. There is no deadline; veterans apply as they seek healthcare.
