Bakersfield resident Miriam Kann is turning 100 on Aug. 5.
That’s pretty wonderful, but not even close to being the most interesting thing about her.
Kann taught scores of military pilots during World War II how to fly by their instruments alone in low- or zero-visibility conditions — not the sort of job most women were steered toward in those days.
“I was mad at Hitler, and what he was doing to his people,” Kann said when asked why she enlisted in the Spars, the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve.
