Step 1: Know What You’re Claiming

Before you file, take a moment to understand what conditions you’re claiming. You’ll need:

  • A current diagnosis
  • Proof it began or was worsened during service
  • Medical evidence showing the connection

Step 2: Choose How to File

You have options:

✅ Online

File directly through VA.gov. You’ll need:

  • A verified ID.me or Login.gov account
  • Digital copies of service and medical records (if available)

Step 3: Prepare for the C&P Exam

If the VA schedules a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam, show up prepared:

  • Know what condition they’re evaluating
  • Keep it factual and brief
  • Be honest about your worst days

After you file, the VA will assign a claim number. You can track your status:

  • On VA.gov
  • By calling 800-827-1000
  • Or with help from your VSO
